Coding for Change – Social Hackathon

Who participated?

The international exchange “Coding for Change – Social Hackathon” brought together young people and youth leaders from several European countries: Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, and Poland. This project provided an opportunity to explore different perspectives, share experiences, and develop intercultural and language competencies.

What did we do during the exchange?

The exchange program was based on active participation, learning by doing, and teamwork. Participants engaged in the following activities:

Integration and team-building games: group tasks, memory exercises, cooking workshops (e.g., making pierogi), and national presentations that helped break down barriers and build relationships.

Workshops on digital identity and AI: education on safe internet use, digital footprints, fake news, and practical sessions on using AI tools such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini.

Learning programming and design: basics of HTML, CSS, UX/UI – participants independently created simple websites and applications.

Project work: teams of participants developed their own motivational bots and websites addressing real social challenges.

Creating campaigns and graphic materials: designing posters, logos, and social media posts in Canva on topics such as mental health, disinformation, and digital habits.

Key results of the project

Real social projects developed during the final hackathon included:

  • A chatbot supporting the fight against addictions

  • A website with a bot for students seeking jobs

  • A campaign addressing men’s mental health

  • A platform for filtering out fake news and disinformation (winning project)

  • An app helping young people find psychological support

Development of soft and digital skills: participants discovered their personality types and learned how to collaborate effectively. They developed digital competencies, teamwork abilities, project management, and presentation skills.

Inspiration for further social action: all teams presented the outcomes of their work in a public forum and shared ideas for continuing their social initiatives after returning to their home countries.

Why is it worth joining us?

The “Coding for Change” exchange proved that learning by doing and working in a diverse team brings the best results. Participants not only gained practical skills, but most importantly, discovered their potential to drive social change – both online and offline.
